Apollo golf guys and gals get great start this season
by: Emilee Duvall
Business manager
The boys and girls golf teams at Apollo have gotten off to a mediocre start this season. Both have accumulated wins and loses, but have high hopes for the post season.
The boys team is led by Coach Bill Rogers. Some of the boys on the team are Chris Sampley, Chris Conkright, Trevor Scott, Andrew Freels, Matt Reynolds, Matt Atkins, Jordan Ferguson, Jansen Smith, and Brice Kittinger. There are no seniors leading the Eagles.
The lowest score as a team thus far is a 316 and placing 8th at the Mulenburg North Invitational Tournament at Central City September 11th.
Some advice Chris Sampley gives is, "Make sure to keep your head still and to accelerate through the ball in every swing." The Apollo boys will be using these tactics to try and peak at the same time so the team can be successful in the later part of the season. Regionals are September 28th at Novadell Country Club in Hopkinsville. The guys expect to do well because they will be able to study and play the course before the regional tourney. Girls golf team has had to play without senior Kara Mantooth who is out with a foot injury. This has left senior, Gabrielle Murphy, as the lone leader. The E-gals , under Coach Dayton Heffelfinger, have a fairly young team. The girls composing the golf squad are Gabrielle Murphy, Kara Mantooth, Bretnae Turner, Ashley Harder, Joy Carter, Rachael O'Bryan, and Lindsey Jarboe.
Apollo's girls beat Owensboro Catholic but lost to Daviess County in a tri-meet September 21st. The medalist of the match was Gabrielle Murphy who shot a 38; one above her personal lowest 37. Bretnae Turner was next behind "G " with a 50.
The best part about being on the team for some of the girls is getting to play with different people from all over the place.
Regionals for the girls will be September 27th at Ben Hawes State Park. The girls hope to do well here and advance to state.
