DC Public Schools receives a new Superintendent
By: Emilee Duvall and Alex Headley
Business and Distribution Managers
As many of you may know, Daviess County Public Schools has a new interim superintendent, Mr. Tom Shelton. Our previous superintendent, Stu Silberman, has transferred to the Fayette County Schools in Lexington. Tom Shelton was hired by Mr. Silberman a few years ago and has learned a lot from him. Mr. Shelton got his bachelor and masters degree at Murray State University. This year he is trying to expand on what he and Silberman started.
Like Mr. Silberman, Shelton will focus on interaction with the kids of DCPS. He plans on attending many extra-curricular programs, especially football games. He will also have a student advisor team, like Stu's Crew. Every few weeks Mr. Shelton will do his best to visit the classrooms of all the schools in Daviess County.
In his year as interim, Mr. Shelton will focus on three main plans. He has been working on many construction projects for the schools in the county. Renovation for Daviess County High and Middle is in process. Also, a new elementary school will be built. Three early learning centers are also on the agenda for further construction projects this year.
Mr. Shelton is also focusing on a healthy staff and healthy students in DCPS. Vending machines will be 50/50 with junkfood and healthy snacks. Much to student dismay, cokes are being replaced with water and fruit drinks. One downside of taking candybars and unhealthy chips out of vending machines is that the schools may lose money. The Fit for Life program is not only centered around students' diet. It focuses on the physical aspect of life as well. Our physical education classes are working with modern technology to improve student's fitness.
Another technological advance the schoolboard has included this year is labtops for the teachers.
Mr. Shelton is familiar with the Daviess County School system. He is ready to work hard for the students and faculty. His advice for Apollo Students is, "Make the most of your time here. High school is a wonderful opportunity. It's a great place to learn and make friends. I encourage you to work hard and enjoy yourselves." With a superintendent that is this involved, it should be a great year.
