Senior athletes and students, Mitch Sharber and Gabrielle "G" Murphy, were recently nominated for a very significant recognition; the Wendy Heisman Athletic Award.Very few athletes in the region are chosen to represent their school and their academic and athletic accomplishments, so this is a chance for both students to be recognized for their talent and work ethic, not only on the athletic field, but in the classroom and community as well. Sharber and Murphy showcased a wealthy amount of criteria to be considered for this award.
Murphy, a seventeen-year-old senior, is a participant in three varsity sports at Apollo. She is the treasurer of Apollo's "executive" Student Council, and is a part of NHS,Yearbook, Renaissance and Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Murphy is recognized on the girls' basketball team for her unbelievable work ethic everyday during practice and during games. She is the starting shortstop on the E-gal’s softball team. As a junior, she qualified to compete in the State Golf Tournament.
Sharber, the male nominee from Apollo, is a well-known, well-liked guy around school. He is an avid runner, participating in both varsity cross-country and track at Apollo (4 years), and is one of the male swimmers on Apollo's varsity swim team. Sharber is an active member of FCA, CSI, and his church youth group at Settle Memorial.
Sharber admitted he was very happy, yet, very suprised when he first heard he was a nominee for the Wendy Heisman Award, knowing that only one male athlete in the entire school was chosen.
"I work hard and focus on what I'm doing or want to accomplish. I've sacrificed what most teenagers do on weekends, like going out with my friends to be successful, " says Sharber.
