Student Loan People JV Challenge

The AHS junior varsity academic team placed 5th overall in the 5th Annual Section 2 Student Loan People JV Challenge,at Madisonville-North Hopkins High School on Saturday, Nov. 20. The Student Loan People JV Challenge is a competition in quick recall and written assessment designed to give an additional competition opportunity for Kentucky’s 9th and 10th grade students.

Team standings and scores were: 1st, Daviess County, 43; 2nd, Madisonville-North Hopkins, 34; 3rd, Owensboro Catholic, 31; 4th, Owensboro, 21; 5th, 2000 and 2001 champion Apollo, 21; tied for 6th, Muhlenberg North, 0 and Muhlenberg South, 0.

In the double-elimination quick recall competition, 2000, 2001 and 2003 champion Apollo went 2-2, outscored their opponents 109-72, and placed 4th. Lauren Thomas led the team in scoring, followed by Thomas Cameron, Roel Flores, Seth Bodnar, Derrick Gauselman and Tristan Hoover. Match results were: Round 1 – lost to Daviess County 24-20. Round 2 – defeated Owensboro 30-14. Round 3 – defeated Muhlenberg South 31-3. Round 4 – lost to Madisonville-North Hopkins 31-28.

In the written assessment competition, the top six students in each subject area were awarded medals and earned points. Written assessment results for the AHS JV Team were: Arts and Humanities – 3rd, Lauren Thomas. Language Arts – 3rd, Seth Bodnar; 7th, Alison Schroeder; 8th, Rose Krzton-Presson. Social Studies – 3rd, Thomas Cameron; 7th, Lauren Thomas. Science – 7th, Roel Flores; 9th, Thomas Cameron. Mathematics – 4th, Grace Oh; 5th, Wei Ji; 6th, Rob Milburn. Also competing were: Joseph Early, Derrick Gauselman, Tristan Hoover, Courtney Schisler, Jermey Taylor and Adam Witt

Brookwood Invitational Scholars Bowl

The AHS quick recall team placed 17th in the 17th annual Brookwood Invitational Scholars Bowl at Brookwood H.S. in Snellville, Georgia, Nov. 20. The tournament featured 119 teams from 73 schools from 7 states, making it the largest academic quiz bowl in the nation hosted by one high school. Each team played six preliminary matches, with the top 64 advancing to a single-elimination playoff.

The Eagles went 6-2 in the tournament, brought their season record to 30-13, outscored their opponents 1,525 to 1,090 and placed 17th as the #22 seed. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring, followed by Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt and Travis McMaine.

Dorman H.S. I of Spartanburg, S.C. won the tournament for the seventh time by defeating Walton H.S. I of Marietta, Ga., 270-190 in the championship match. Ezell-Harding Christian School of Antioch, Tenn. placed third and Indian Springs, Ala. was fourth.

Preliminary match results were: Round 1 – defeated Athens (Ga.) Academy II, 275-115. Round 2 – lost to North Gwinnett H.S. of Suwanee, Ga., 205-200. Round 3 – defeated Eagle’s Landing H.S. I of McDonough, Ga., 175-145. Round 4 – defeated Vandebilt Catholic H.S. I of Houma, La., 195-175. Round 5 – defeated Vero Beach (Fla.) H.S. II, 210-120. Round 6 – defeated Eagle’s Landing H.S. II, 225-30. Playoff match results were: Round of 64 - #22 seed Apollo defeated #43 seed Dunbar H.S. III of Lexington, Ky., 155-75. Round of 32 – lost to #11 seed Daviess County H.S., 235-130.

After the tournament, the team went to nearby Stone Mountain Park where they viewed the Confederate Memorial carving and rode the skylift to the top of Stone Mountain, from which they viewed the Atlanta skyline and the surrounding Georgia countryside..

Pennyrile Meet #5

The Apollo academic team competed in Pennyrile Academic Association meet #5 at Daviess County High School Nov. 29.

The varsity quick recall team went 1-1, defeating Muhlenberg South 23-17 and losing to Daviess County 31-12, finishing the PAA season with an 8-2 record and bringing their overall record to 31-14. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 7 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt and Travis McMaine.

The junior varsity quick recall team went 1-1, defeating Muhlenberg South 22-5 and losing to Daviess County 26-9, finishing the PAA season with a 6-4 record. Lauren Thomas led the team in scoring with 8 tossups per match, followed by Thomas Cameron, Roel Flores, Tristan Hoover and Adam Witt.

Varsity written assessment results were: Arts and Humanities – 2nd, Elizabeth Rogers; 4th, Will Pierce; 5th, Taryn Rice; 8th, Caroline Buchanan. Language Arts – tied for 4th, Carrie Gentry and Elaina Reid; 7th, Meghan Van Bussum. Social Studies – 3rd, Clayton Carden; 6th, Ed Cureton; 7th, Dayved Bell; 8th, Rachel Gentry. Science – 3rd, Branden Payton; tied for 6th, Travis McMaine and Kevin Reel; 9th, Derek Morgan. Math – tied for 1st, Ryan Seabolt and Ian Wilkey; 6th, Rebecca Doom; 9th, Casey Cambron.

Junior varsity written assessment results were: Arts and Humanities – 1st, Lauren Thomas; 2nd, Jermey Taylor; 5th, Joseph Early; 6th, Adam Witt. Language Arts – 1st, Seth Bodnar; 4th, Alison Schroeder; 5th, Courtney Schisler; 6th, Rose Krzton-Presson. Social Studies – 2nd, Thomas Cameron; 4th, Tristan Hoover; 5th, Derrick Gauselman; 8th, Joseph Early. Science – 1st, Roel Flores; 2nd, Madeline Neel; 6th, Samantha Foster; 7th, Andrew Stelmach. Math – 3rd, Grace Oh; 5th, Wei Ji; 7th, Rob Milburn; 8th, Matt Reynolds.

2003-2004 PAA Final Standings

The Apollo academic team once again placed among the top teams in the overall final standings for the 5-meet season of the 15-school Pennyrile Academic Association.

The varsity quick recall team placed 3rd with an 8-2 record, Apollo’s 16th top-3 placing in 17 years of PAA varsity quick recall. They have compiled an overall record of 166-19. The junior varsity quick recall team placed 5th with a 6-4 record, Apollo’s 13th top-5 placing in 15 years of PAA JV quick recall. They have compiled an overall record of 131-34.

In written assessment, AHS earned 1 of the 10 first-place overall plaques, fourth highest in the PAA. We earned 5 of the 53 plaques for placing in the top 5 overall, fifth highest in the PAA. We placed 13 team members in the top 10 overall, fourth highest in the PAA. We placed 23 team members in the top 20 overall, second highest in the PAA. The overall standings were determined by the total of the students’ top 3 scores.
