ASMA Contest #4
Fifty-four Apollo math students participated in the American Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #4 Jan. 13. The contest involved solving 7 math problems. Ryan Seabolt and Ian Wilkey tied for the top score with perfect scores of 7. They were followed by: tied for 3rd, Travis McMaine and Branden Payton; tied for 5th, Casey Cambron, T.J. Daugherty, Tabitha Evans, Katie Hagan, Grace Oh, Sarah Thomas and Charity Young; tied for 12th, Whitney Adams, Brandon Cox, Rebecca Doom, Emilee Duvall, Nathan McDivitt, Alyssa Oller, Elaina Reid, Elizabeth Rogers, Amanda Saunders, Chris Silvers and Grant Todd.
Daviess County Panther Premier Invitational Tournament
Two Apollo quick recall teams participated in the Daviess County Panther Premier Invitational Tournament at Daviess County High School Jan. 15. The tournament featured 13 Kentucky teams.
In the tournament, teams played five preliminary matches. The top 12 teams advanced to a single-elimination playoff, seeded by win-loss record and total points in the preliminaries, with the top four earning byes in the first round.
Defending Governor's Cup state champion Russell (6-1-1), the No. 4 seed, placed first by defeating No. 2 seed Madisonville-North Hopkins A (5-1-2) 300-250 in the championship match. Danville A (5-1-2), the No. 1 seed, placed third by defeating No. 6 seed Lone Oak (5-4) in the consolation match.
Apollo A went 4-3, brought their overall record to 47-25, outscored their opponents 1,750 to1,650 and placed fifth place as the No. 7 seed. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 6 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt, Lauren Thomas and Thomas Cameron. Apollo B went 0-5 and placed 13th. Derrick Gauselman led the team in scoring, followed by Rob Milburn, Courtney Schisler, Jermey Taylor, Seth Bodnar and Rose Krzton-Presson.
Preliminary match results for the Apollo teams were: Round 1 - AHS A lost to Campbell County 290-280; AHS B lost to Henderson County 220-70. Round 2 - AHS A defeated Danville C 230-170; AHS B lost to Lone Oak 310-110. Round 3 - AHS A defeated Madisonville-North Hopkins B 270-190. Round 4 - AHS A lost to Russell 280-240; AHS B lost to OHS 240-100. Round 5 - AHS B lost to Campbell County 260-100. Round 6 - AHS A defeated Danville B 220-160; AHS B lost to Danville A 290-40.
Playoff match results for Apollo were: Round 1 - No. 7 seed Apollo A defeated No. 10 seed Campbell County 320-200. Quarterfinals - Apollo A lost to No. 2 seed Madisonville-North Hopkins A 360-190.
Central Hardin High School Academic Challenge
Two Apollo quick recall teams participated in the Central Hardin High School Academic Challenge at Central Hardin High School in Cecilia Jan. 22. The tournament featured
14 Kentucky teams.
In the tournament, the teams were divided into two pools and played seven preliminary matches, six in their pool and one crossover match. The top eight teams advanced to a single-elimination playoff, seeded by win-loss record and total points in the six pool matches.
Madisonville-North Hopkins A (10-0), the No. 1 seed, placed first by defeating No. 3 seed Daviess County (8-2) 310-250 in the championship match. Madisonville-North Hopkins B (9-1), the No. 2 seed, placed third by defeating No. 4 seed Apollo A (6-4) 320-160 in the consolation match. The top four teams were awarded trophies.
Apollo A went 6-4, brought its overall record to 54-31, outscored their opponents 2,600 to 2,010 and placed fourth as the No. 4 seed. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 9 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Lauren Thomas and Thomas Cameron. Apollo B went 0-7 and placed 13th. Roel Flores led the team in scoring, followed by Rob Milburn, Seth Bodnar, Adam Witt, Courtney Schisler and Rose Krzton-Presson.

Round 6 - AHS A defeated Breckinridge County B 250-130; AHS B lost to Madisonville-North Hopkins A 370-40. Round 7 - AHS A defeated Danville 230-150; AHS B lost to Edmonson County 130-80.
Playoff match results for Apollo were: Quarterfinals - No. 4 seed Apollo A defeated No. 5 seed Breckinridge County A 240-190. Semifinals - Apollo A lost to No. 1 seed Madisonville-North Hopkins A 340-190. Consolation Match - Apollo A lost to No. 2 seed Madisonville-North Hopkins B 320-160.
"Academic Challenge"
The Apollo quick recall team placed third in this year's "Academic Challenge" series.
The taping of the program for the 2004-2005 season took place on Jan. 11, 18
and 25 at the Owensboro High School television studio. Dr. Ellen Dugan-Barrette, professor of English at Brescia University , served as moderator and host of the program for the 10th straight year. The show, featuring the quick recall teams of Apollo High School , Daviess County High School , Owensboro High School and Owensboro Catholic High School , is televised on Adelphia Cable OPS Channel 53 and DCPS Channel 54.
Junior captain Elizabeth Rogers, who averaged 9 tossups per match in the series, led the team in scoring, followed by Ian Wilkey, Lauren Thomas, Thomas Cameron, Ryan Seabolt and Branden Payton. The team brought its overall record to 55-33.
AHS results in the three tapings were: Jan.11: Match 1 - lost to Daviess County 200-110. Match 2 - defeated Owensboro 255-155. Match 3 - lost to Owensboro Catholic 365-195. Jan. 18: Match 1 - lost to Owensboro 305-145. Match 2 - lost to Daviess County 355-190. Match 3 - defeated Owensboro Catholic 245-230. Jan. 25: Match 1 - lost to Owensboro Catholic 270-210. Match 2 - lost to Daviess County 255-235. Match 3 - defeated Owensboro 315-95.
Owensboro Catholic (7-2) placed first in the series for the first time in the 21-year run of the program. The Aces have a total of one first, four seconds, five thirds and 11 fourths and an all-time series record of 45-128. Daviess County (6-3) placed second. The Panthers have won three outright championships and three co-championships and have a total of six firsts, seven seconds, six thirds and two fourths and an all-time series record of 94-79. Apollo (3-6) placed third. Apollo has won 12 outright championships and three co-championships and has a total of 15 firsts, four seconds and two thirds and an all-time series record of 128-45. Owensboro (2-7) placed fourth. The Red Devils have won two outright championships and have a total of two firsts, six seconds, eight thirds and five fourths and an all-time series record of 79-94. Brescia University Academic Competition
The Apollo quick recall A team placed second in the 2005 Brescia University Acad
emic Competition Jan. 29. The competition consisted of contests in English composition and quick recall.
In the English composition portion of the competition, students were given a prompt and allowed 90 minutes in which to write their compositions. Results for AHS writers were: fourth, Elaina Reid; sixth, Rachel Gentry; seventh, Betsy Harpe; ninth, Ashley Harder.
The quick recall portion of the competition featured 8 teams from 6 high schools. The teams played a round robin in which each team played the other seven teams. Final standings were determined by win-loss record, head-to-head and total points.
Madisonville-North Hopkins (7-0) placed first for the second time. Six-time Brescia champion Apollo A (5-2) placed second. Apollo continued a streak of 14 straight Brescia tournaments in which AHS teams have placed third or better and have compiled a 14-year record of 70-12. The Eagles outscored their opponents 164-108 and improved their overall season record to 60-35. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 6 tossups per match, followed by Lauren Thomas, Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt and Thomas Cameron. Members of the first-place team are eligible for $2,500 Brescia University Scholarships and members of the second-place team are eligible for $1,000 Brescia University Scholarships. Owensboro (5-2) placed third. The top three teams were awarded a trophy and individual medals. Breckinridge County A (4-3) placed fourth. Owensboro Catholic (4-3) placed fifth. Breckinridge County B (2-5) placed sixth. Henderson County (1-6) placed seventh. Apollo B (0-7) placed eighth. Roel Flores led the team in scoring, followed by Branden Payton, Rob Milburn, Adam Witt, Rose Krzton-Presson, Derrick Gauselman and Jermey Taylor.
Match results were the AHS teams were: Round 1 - AHS A defeated Breckinridge County A 28-24 in overtime; AHS B lost to Breckinrdige County B 17-13. Round 2 - AHS A defeated Breckinridge County B 32-13; AHS B lost to Henderson County 26-10.
Round 3 - AHS A defeated Henderson County 27-9; AHS B lost to OHS 29-5. Round 4 - AHS A defeated Owensboro 28-18; AHS B lost to Breckinridge County A 33-5. Round 5 - AHS A defeated AHS B 24-4. Round 6 - AHS A lost to OCHS 16-12; AHS B lost to Madisonville-North Hopkins 21-8. Round 7 - AHS A lost to Madisonville-North Hopkins 24-13; AHS B lost to OCHS 8-7.
