Apollo Academic Team News 3/9/05

AMC 10 & 12

Twelve Apollo math students participated in the American Mathematics Competitions AMC 10 and AMC 12 Feb. 1. Each contest consisted of 25 math problems to be worked in 75 minutes. Results for each contest were: AMC 10 - 1st, Grace Oh; 2nd, Wei Ji; 3rd, Matt Reynolds; 4th, Chelsea Tipmore; 5th, Courtney Schisler; 6th, Cheryl Kreke. AMC 12 - 1st, Ryan Seabolt; tied for 2nd, Branden Payton and Ian Wilkey; 4th, Grant Todd; 5th, Ashley Warren; 6th, Rebecca Doom.

KAAC 10th District Governor's Cup

The Apollo academic team placed 2nd overall in the 20th Annual KAAC 10th District Governor's Cup Competition held Jan. 20 and Feb. 5 at Apollo. Team standings were: 1st, Daviess County, 61 points; 2nd, Apollo, 30.5 points; 3rd, Owensboro Catholic, 15.5 points; 4th, Owensboro, 13 points. This is the 18th straight time that AHS teams have placed 1st (10 times) or 2nd (8 times) in the district in overall points!

The top two in team events and the top five in individual written categories advanced to the regional. Results for AHS team members were:

Quick Recall, 2nd Place Team - Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 13 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt, Lauren Thomas and Thomas Cameron. The team went 3-2 and brought their overall record to 63-37. Match results were: Round 1 - lost to Daviess County 53-26. Round 2 - defeated Owensboro 44-25. Round 3 - defeated Owensboro Catholic 50-27. Round 4 - defeated Daviess County 43-33. Championship Match - lost to Daviess County 49-33. This is the 18th time AHS quick recall teams have advanced to the regional in 20 years!

Future Problem Solving, 1st Place Team - Caroline Buchanan, Ed Cureton, Rose Krzton-Presson and Courtney Schisler. This is the 17th time Apollo FPS teams have advanced to the regional and their 10th district championship!

English Composition - 4th, Elaina Reid; 7th, Betsy Harpe; 12th, Rachel Gentry. Arts and Humanities - 2nd , Lauren Thomas; 4th, Elizabeth Rogers; 10th, Caroline Buchanan. Language Arts - tied for 8th, Seth Bodnar and Carrie Gentry; 10th, Meghan Van Bussum. Social Studies - 2nd, Thomas Cameron; 4th, Elizabeth Rogers; 6th, Lauren Thomas. Science - 6th, Branden Payton; 7th, Travis McMaine; 11th, Ryan Seabolt. Mathematics - tied for 3rd, Ryan Seabolt and Ian Wilkey; 12th, Branden Payton.

ASMA Contest #5

Fifty-0ne Apollo math students participated in the American Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #5 Feb. 10. The contest involved solving 7 math problems. Ryan Seabolt and Ian Wilkey tied for the top score with scores of 4. They were followed by: tied for 3rd, T.J. Daugherty, Rebecca Doom, Jessica Head, Nathan McDivitt, Eric Moore, Charles Nix, Grace Oh and Jordan Perry; tied for 11th, Whitney Adams, Ashley Boswell, Jordan Carlock, Brandon Cox, Ashley Estes, Kelly Kortz, Travis McMaine, Sean O'Bryan, Maxson Overby, Jacqueline Payne, Branden Payton, Elizabeth Rogers, Chris Silvers, Kelsey Stewart and Sarah Thomas.

KAAC 3rd Region Governor's Cup

The Apollo academic team placed 2nd overall in the 20th Annual KAAC 3rd Region Governor's Cup Competition held Feb. 17 and 19 at Daviess Coubty High School. Team standings and points were: 1st, Daviess County, 44; 2nd, Apollo, 22; 3rd, Breckinridge County, 17; 4th, Meade County, 11.5; 5th, Owensboro, 8; 6th,Grayson County, 7; 7th, Owensboro Catholic, 6; 8th, Hancock County, 3. This is the 16th time that AHS teams have placed 1st (9 times) or 2nd (7times) in the region in overall points!

The top two in team events and the top five in individual written categories advanced to the state finals. Results for AHS team members were:

The team went 2-2 and brought their overall record to 65-39. Match results were: Round 1 - defeated Henderson County 36-22. Round 2 - defeated Edmonson County 41-19. Round 3 - lost to Daviess County 47-30. Round 4 - lost to Breckinridge County 40-35.

Academic WorldQuest 2005

The Apollo academic team placed fourth in the Academic WorldQuest 2005 competition at Bellarmine University in Louisville on February 26. Sponsored by the Louisville International Cultural Center and the Louisville World Affairs Council, the competition featured 10 schools: Apollo, six from Louisville and three from southeastern Indiana. The winner advanced to the national competition April 1-3 in Washington, D.C.

The top five schools were: first, DuPont Manual H.S. of Louisville; second, Trinity H.S. of Louisville; third, Our Lady of Providence H.S. of Clarksville, Ind.; tied for fourth, Apollo and Assumption H.S. of Louisville.

The competition consisted of six 20-question rounds. The questions were projected on a screen and the teams had 15 seconds to come to consensus and enter their answer. Topics for the rounds were: Round 1 - Current Events; Round 2 - Faces and Places; Round 3 - Global Economies and Organizations; Round 4 - The World In The 20th Century; Round 5 - Geography and Flags; Round 6 - World Cultures.

Apollo team members Thomas Cameron, Elizabeth Rogers, Ryan Seabolt, Lauren Thomas and Ian Wilkey missed placing third by 1 question out of 120!

Brescia University Math-Science Competition

The Apollo science team placed second in the 9th Annual Brescia University Math-Science Competition March 5. The competition consisted of four contest areas. In the Problem Solving Exam Contest, students took ten-question, multiple-choice exams in each of the subject areas of biology, chemistry, physics, math and computer science. In the Experimentation and Estimation Contest, teams of up to four students estimated quantitative answers to problems based on scientific reasoning and experimentation. In the Design Contest, students had to design a vehicle powered only by a single birthday cake candle. In the Internet Search Contest, students were allowed 75 minutes to search the net for answers to 25 trivia questions.

The overall team standings for the competition were: first, Hopkinsville; second, Apollo; third, Owensboro. Apollo teams had won the previous eight competitions. Ian Wilkey received Apollo's Outstanding Contestant Award for the second straight year.

Chemistry: 1st, Rob Milburn; 3rd, Spenser Girten; 6th, Ian Wilkey; tied for 7th, Travis McMaine and Grace Oh; tied for 10th, Roel Flores and Wei Ji. Physics: 2nd, Will Pierce; 3rd, Derek Morgan; tied for 7th, Thomas Cameron and Ian Wilkey. Math: 2nd, Ryan Seabolt; 3rd, Ian Wilkey; tied for 6th, Tristan Hoover and Derek Morgan; tied for 8th, Michael Brothers and Spenser Girten. Computer Science: 2nd, Ian Wilkey; 3rd, Tim Hicks; 4th, Travis McMaine; 6th, Ryan Seabolt; tied for 8th, Joseph Early and David Gant; 10th, Wei Ji.

Experimentation and Estimation Contest: first, Team 1 (Rose Krzton-Presson, Ryan Seabolt, Lauren Thomas, Ian Wilkey); second, Team 2 (Thomas Cameron, Roel Flores, Spenser Girten, Rob Milburn); fifth, Team 3 (Jeremy Early, Joseph Early, David Gant); sixth, Team 4 (Travis McMaine, Derek Morgan, Branden Payton); ninth, Team 5 (Cheryl Kreke, Madeline Neel, Chelsea Tipmore).

Design Contest: 4th, Spenser Girten; 5th, Jeremy Early, Joseph Early and Rob Milburn; 6th, Will Pierce.

Internet Search Contest: 2nd, Ed Cureton; 5th, Michael Brothers; 6th, Rose Krzton-Presson; 9th, Lauren Thomas; 10th, Terry Lee.
