Apollo Academic Team News 4/17/05

ASMA Contest #6

Sixty-seven Apollo math students participated in the American Scholastic Mathematics Association Contest #6 March 10. The contest involved solving 7 math problems. Ian Wilkey had the top score with a perfect score of 7. He was followed by: tied for 2nd, Ryan Seabolt and Nathan McDivitt; 4th, Travis McMaine; tied for 5th, Casey Cambron, Chris Conkright, Delana Hill, Eric Moore, Branden Payton, Elizabeth Rogers, and Amanda Saunders; tied for 12th, Whitney Adams, Jordan Carlock, Sabrina Chapman, T.J. Daugherty, Rebecca Doom, Ashley Estes, Jessica Head, Paris Kidd, Crystal Marsh, Sean O'Bryan, Grace Oh, Alyssa Oller, Jacqueline Payne, Kevin Reel, Trevor Scott, Kelsey Stewart, Sarah Thomas, Grant Todd and Sarah Williams.

Apollo's top scorers for the six-contest ASMA 2004-2005 season were: 1st, Ian Wilkey; 2nd, Ryan Seabolt; 3rd, Travis McMaine; 4th, Nathan McDivitt; 5th, Branden Payton; 6th, T.J. Daugherty; tied for 7th, Casey Cambron and Grace Oh; 9th, Eric Moore; tied for 10th, Rebecca Doom, Crystal Marsh and Amanda Saunders; tied for 13th, Emilee Duvall and Grant Todd; tied for 15th, Brandon Cox, Charles Nix and Sarah Thomas.

KAAC Governor's Cup State Finals

The Apollo academic team competed in the 20th Annual KAAC Governor's Cup State Finals held at the Galt House in Louisville March 13-14.

Results for AHS team members in written assessment in which 80+ students competed in each subject area were: Mathematics - 9th, Ian Wilkey; 22nd, Ryan Seabolt. Arts and Humanities - tied for 17th, Elizabeth Rogers and Lauren Thomas. Social Studies - 47th, Thomas Cameron.

Kentucky Science Olympiad Regional

The Apollo science team placed 2nd in the 14th Annual Kentucky Science Olympiad Western Regional at Madisonville Community College on March 19. This is the ninth time Apollo science teams have placed in the top two in the regional and the tenth time they have qualified for the state finals.

The competition involved 10 high school teams competing in 23 events. The challenging and motivating events were well balanced among the various scientific disciplines of biology, chemistry, physics, earth science and technology. Apollo earned medals in 10 events (5 firsts, 2 seconds, 3 thirds).

AHS team members earning medals for placing in the top three in their events were: 1st place, "Astronomy," Roel Flores and Will Pierce; 1st place, "Experimental Design," Grace Oh, Branden Payton and Jermey Taylor; 1st place, "Forestry," Jeremy Early and Elizabeth Rogers; 1st place, "Practical Data Gathering," Wei Ji and Grace Oh; 1st place, "Remote Sensing," David Gant and Will Pierce; 2nd place, "Compute This," Thomas Cameron and David Gant; 2nd place, "Fossils," Thomas Cameron and Joseph Early; 3rd place, "Health Science," Tim Hicks and Derek Morgan; 3rd place, "Physics Lab," Tim Hicks and Derek Morgan; 3rd place, "Robot Ramble," David Gant, Rob Milburn and Jeremy Taylor.

U of E High School Programming Contest

Two Apollo High School computer programming teams were among 12 teams from 9 high schools from Illinois , Indiana , Kentucky and Tennessee participating in the 14th Annual University of Evansville High School Programming Contest on March 19. In the contest, teams were given 2 ½ hours in which to solve six programming problems.

Covenant Christian High School of Indianapolis , Ind. won the contest, Park Tudor School B of Indianapolis placed second and Park Tudor School A placed third. All three solved five problems. Cathedral High School of Indianapolis placed fourth. Apollo B - Michael Brothers, Bryan Hopper, Chris Martin and Matthew Thompson placed fifth. Apollo A - Casey Cambron, Travis McMaine, Ryan Seabolt and Ian Wilkey placed sixth. All three solved three problems.

Apollo 9th Grade Academic Tournament

The Apollo freshman academic teamplaced 1st in written assessment and 4th in quick recall in 13th Annual Apollo High School 9th Grade Academic Tournament on April 9.

The written assessment competition consisted of up to three students from each school taking 50-question, multiple-choice tests in six subject areas, with the top two scores being totaled to determine the team score. Medals were awarded to the top five students in each subject area and trophies were awarded to the top four teams.

Apollo (440) won in written assessment for seventh time. Five-time winner Daviess County (430) placed second, Owensboro Catholic (384) placed third, Breckinridge County (336) placed fourth and Owensboro (268) placed fifth.

AHS team members placing in the top five in the individual subject areas were:

Arts and Humanities - 2nd, Lauren Thomas; 5th, Rose Krzton-Presson. Language Arts - 1st, Courtney Schisler; 2nd, Kaytee Williams; 5th, Whitney Thomas. Social Studies - 1st, Lauren Thomas; 5th, Derrick Gauselman. Spelling - 1st, Alison Schroeder; 2nd, Betsy Harpe; 5th, Chelsea Tipmore. Also participating in written assessment were: Hannah Greer, Emily Jones, Alex Krampe, Cheryl Kreke, Madeline Neel, Keith Warner. In the quick recall competition, the teams played four round-robin matches, the results of which were used to seed the top four teams for a single-elimination playoff, based on win-loss record and head-to-head. Trophies were awarded to the top four teams.

Owensboro (5-1) won in quick recall for the first time. Breckinridge County (3-3) placed second, two-time champion Daviess County (3-3) placed third, two-time champion Apollo (3-3) placed fourth and Owensboro Catholic (0-4) placed fifth.

Lauren Thomas received the Martha Dillihay MVP Award that honors the memory of the late Muhlenberg South assistant academic coach and ardent supporter of freshman academic competition. Lauren led the team in scoring with 11 tossups per match, followed by Derrick Gauselman, Courtney Schisler, Betsy Harpe, Alex Krampe, Emily Jones, Rose Krzton-Presson, Alison Schroeder, Whitney Thomas and Kaytee Williams.

Round-robin match results were: Round 1 - lost to Breckinridge County 22-21. Round 2 - defeated Owensboro Catholic 30-23. Round 3 - defeated Owensboro 26-24. Round 4 - defeated Daviess County 33-26. Playoff match results were: Semifinals - lost to Breckinridge County 27-22. Consolation - lost to Daviess County 32-23.

Vanderbilt ABC #29

The Apollo junior varsity quick recall team placed 5th and the varsity quick recall team placed 17th in the Vanderbilt University Academic Bowl Contest XXIX in Nashville , Tennessee on April 16. The tournament featured 16 JV teams from 5 states and 27 varsity teams from 7 states.

In the tournament, teams were divided into five or six team pools, with each team playing four or five preliminary matches. The results were used to seed the teams into single-elimination playoffs.

Dorman A of Spartanburg , S.C. won their ninth Vandy ABC varsity tournament by defeating Detroit Country Day of Beverly Hills, Mich., 275-145 in the championship match. Brookwood of Snellville, Ga. and Dorman B tied for third

Dunbar A won the JV tournament by defeating Ezell-Harding Christian School of Anticoh, Tenn. , 160-150 in the championship match. Detroit Catholic Central and Madisonville-North Hopkins tied for third.

The AHS varsity team went 3-3 in the tournament, outscored their opponents 1,475 to 1,215, and brought their overall record to 68-42. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 13 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Ryan Seabolt and Branden Payton.

The AHS JV team went 4-2 in the tournament, outscored their opponents 1,110 to 685, and brought their overall record to 13-16. Lauren Thomas led the team in scoring with 6 tossups per match, followed by Thomas Cameron, Roel Flores and Rob Milburn.

AHS varsity match results were: Preliminaries: Round 1 - lost to Northeast Magnet of Macon, Ga., 215-210. Round 2 - defeated Lincoln County of Fayetteville, Tenn., 345-135. Round 3 - defeated Itawamba of Fulton, Miss., 370-90. Round 4 - lost to Detroit Catholic Central, 510-135. Round 5 - defeated Cordova ( Tenn. ) A, 240-80. Playoffs: Round 1 - lost to Centennial of Roswell, Ga., 185-175.

AHS JV match results were: Preliminaries: Round 1 - defeated Franklin-Simpson, 195-35. Round 2 - defeated Woodford County , 300-80. Round 3 - lost to Detroit Catholic Central, 235-170. Round 4 - defeated Southwest Magnet of Macon, Ga., 180-0. Playoffs: Round 1 - defeated Cordova, 145-70. Quarterfinals - lost to Ezell-Harding Christian School , 265-120.
