Apollo Academic Team News 5/8/05

Spring 2005 KMO

Two teams of Apollo academic team members competed in the Spring 2005 Knowledge Master Open April 18 &19. Overall, 1,839 student academic teams including 25,366 students from 48 states, the District of Columbia and nine foreign countries competed in the 200-question contest at their own schools, testing their knowledge in all areas of the curriculum, using specially programmed computer disks. Scores were based on speed and accuracy, with a perfect score of 2,000 possible, if all 200 questions were answered correctly within seven seconds!

In the junior high division, there were 142 teams competing. The top score was 1,675 and the mean score was 1,286.

The Apollo High School ninth-grade team scored 1,440 points, placing third in the state and 40th (top 28%) overall internationally.

The AHS ninth-grade team included Derrick Gauselman, Emily Jones, Alex Krampe, Cheryl Kreke, Rose Krzton-Presson, Madeline Neel, Matt Reynolds, Courtney Schisler, Alison Schroeder, Lauren Thomas, Chelsea Tipmore and Kaytee Williams.

In the high school division, there were 845 teams competing. The top score was 1,824 and the mean score was 1,172.

The Apollo High School team scored 1,302 points, placing eighth in the state and 252nd (top 30%) overall internationally.

The AHS team included Seth Bodnar, Thomas Cameron, Roel Flores, Travis McMaine, Rob Milburn, Derek Morgan, Branden Payton, Elizabeth Rogers, Ryan Seabolt, Lauren Thomas and Ian Wilkey.

Derby Festival Foundation Academic Challenge

The Apollo junior varsity quick recall team competed in the 2005 Derby Festival Foundation Academic Challenge held April 29-30 at the Executive West Hotel in Louisville . Fifty teams, 24 from the Louisville area and 26 from across the state, participated.

In the tournament, the teams took a general knowledge test for playoff seeding and played three preliminary matches on Friday, April 29. The top 16, based on win-loss record and test score, advanced to a single-elimination playoff on Saturday, April 30. All participants received a tournament t-shirt, a certificate and a 2005 Pegasus pin. The top eight teams were awarded trophies. The top four teams received monetary awards from the Kentucky Derby Festival Foundation: first place - $1,000; second place - $500; third place - $300; fourth place - $200. Pikeville won the tournament, with Russell second, Johnson Central third and Danville fourth.

In the preliminaries, 13 teams went 3-0 and nine teams went 2-1, with only three of those making the 16-team playoffs based on test scores. The AHS team went 2-1, outscored their opponents 100-84 and tied for 17th place out of 50 teams. Team captain Lauren Thomas led teammates Seth Bodnar, Thomas Cameron, Roel Flores, Derrick Gauselman, Rose Krzton-Presson, Rob Milburn and Courtney Schisler in scoring. Preliminary match results were: Round 1 – defeated Sheldon Clark 34-33. Round 2 – lost to Paul Blazer 35-28. Round 3 – defeated Western Hills 39-16.

WKU Computer Problem Solving Contest

Seven teams of AHS computer programming students were among 14 teams from 4 schools competing in the Western Kentucky University Computer Problem Solving Contest in Bowling Green on May 5. In the contest, teams were given 2 ½ hours to solve five programming problems. Teams placing in the top three were awarded ribbons and a trophy and the members of the winning team were awarded $1,000 WKU scholarships.

AHS team 1 (4 solved) – Michael Brothers, Ryan Seabolt and Ian Wilkey placed 2nd. This is the seventh time Apollo teams have placed 2nd or better in the WKU contest, including 1st in 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2002 and 2nd in 1998 & 2004. AHS team 6 (3 solved) –Richard Robertson, and Matthew Thomas placed 3rd. AHS teams 4 (3 solved) – Casey Cambron, Matt Henry and Nathan Wade and 5 (3 solved) - Bryan Hopper, Chris Martin and Matthew Thompson tied for 4th place. AHS team 2 (1 solved) - Logan Grimsley, Tim Hicks and Kyle Hestand placed 10th. AHS teams 3 (0 solved) – Carrie Gentry, Delana Hill and Amber Satterfield and 7 (0 solved) – Justin Davis, T.J. Johnson and Willy Johnson tied for 12th place.
