Apollo High School

Small Learning Community

The vision of the SLC of Apollo High School is to promote a successful transition to high school-establish the habits and skills necessary for high school success.

The goals for the SLC are as follows:

High expectations for students, parents, and teachers . The academy plans to meet individually with each student and parent during schedule pick-up to discuss expectations, rules, and consequences. Additional parent/teacher conferences are planned each semester.

High standards for core content . Teachers are encouraged to plan engaging lessons. Content should be integrated, consist of projects, and contain contextual learning.

Personal relationships . Teachers are encouraged to be advisors/mentors to students. Academy teachers will be assigned 9 th grade CAP groups. Students and families need to be actively involved in education planning.

Student involvement . Students are encouraged to be involved in at least one co-curricular activity. A fair is suggested in early September to showcase the different clubs and activities at Apollo.

Professional Development . Academy teachers need additional training to fully implement all components of the small learning community. Teachers also need extra time during the school day for planning, integrating lessons, etc.

Accountability. Data needs to be collected which documents any activities concerning 9 th grade students. Teachers should keep records of parent contacts. Tim Taylor and Jerry Crabtree will collect other data that pertains to student success. Reports will be given to all faculty members and the site-based council.

Improve the failure rate, retention rate, discipline actions, and attendance rate of the 9 th grade. This data will help guide the direction of the academy .
