August 2005 - LETTER ONE--Things to get ready for Class of 2006! Remember you must have all of the required credits and courses to graduate in May.
Please check your schedule and make sure you have all required credits and courses to graduate. You must have English, Government, Economics and a math class (depending on your diploma).
I would like to give you some statistics-
145 of you took the ACT or SAT---This is great! The first ACT in Owensboro is October 22 and you must register by SEPTEMBER 16. There is an ACT offered in Evansville , IN on September 24 and you must register by August 19. Registration packets are in the guidance office window or you can go online at www.act.org with a credit/debit card. Remember to enter the AHS code- 182033 in the section labeled high school code. We need the scores to put on your transcript and for KEES money.
I encourage you to try the SAT as well. Register for the SAT at www.collegeboard.com and remember to put our high school code as well.
Remember that colleges/universities will use your ACT/SAT scores for several reasons. The results are used to place you in college level courses, admission to the college, scholarship opportunities, and NCAA eligibility. The ACT/SAT is extremely important to get ready for, so please take practice tests, attend seminars to review, and discuss other options with me.
Learn about colleges at www.collegeboard.com and www.campustours.com . Browse catalogs and attend college fairs. Another great website to refer to is www.anycollege.net or www.gohigher.ky.org On the Go Higher website you will be able to access virtual campus tours, online admissions and financial aid application, and career planning sites.
The annual senior parent meeting will be Tuesday, September 13th at 6:30 p.m. Parents/guardians received a letter regarding the meeting and were to call the guidance office to let us know they would attend.
A free scholarship website to research is www.fastweb.com- You have had this website since Sophomore year---please log on and you will receive scholarship opportunities by email. I receive scholarship information throughout the year and will give you information through senior letters. Any scholarship information will be distributed through letters such as this and there will be a number beside the scholarship and a box in the Guidance Office with the scholarship folders . Find the corresponding number and take an application if you are interested. You will find one scholarship listed at the end of the letter. Individual colleges will not send me applications - you get on line and see when their scholarship applications are due and YOU MUST PROCESS THE FORMS.
If you need a letter of recommendation from me or another teacher, please make sure that you allow two weeks to have this letter written. You will need to have a resume ready to give me in order for me to write the letter. If you would like help with the resume, see me PLEASE.
****Seniors are allowed one college visit day this year. You must see Mr. Broughton prior to making the actual visit. There is an AHS school form that you will take with you the day of the visit. YOU MUST GET THE FORM IN MR. BROUGHTON'S OFFICE-NOT THROUGH JAN YOUNG.
If you are interested in playing sports in college at an NCAA Institution, you have to file the NCAA Clearinghouse Form. Stop by and discuss this with me. So far, there are 6 seniors that have filed the NCAA Clearinghouse Form.
I will be making an attempt to meet with small groups at the beginning of the year and then I beg, plead, and hope that you will make individual appointments with me. When it is your meeting time, you will have my full attention. This is extremely important to me because your questions and concerns should be answered.
