Letter Number 4 Welcome back from Fall Break

Okay people-IT IS TIME TO APPLY TO THE UNIVERSITIES/COLLEGES IN ORDER. This means filling out an application, completing the requirements, and mailing it in. Some schools must admit you before allowing you to apply for housing. The question I have for you is this-WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO BEGIN THE CAMPUS VISITS??? Call the admissions counselor at the school and set a specific date. Make sure that you speak to someone in financial aid, scholarships, housing, etc.

Then you let Mr. Broughton know what date you will go (if it means missing a day of school), and he will give you a form that is required for you to complete and have your teachers sign.

VISIT THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE ON NOVEMBER 19 TH FROM 1-4 EST. RESERVATIONS ARE NOT REQUIRED. MEETING WILL BEGIN IN THE STUDENT ACTIVITIES BUILDING AT U OF L. CALL 1-800-334-8635 FOR FURTHER INFORMATION.

I gave essay scholarship information to your English teachers. These are great scholarships and one is Due on November 1 and the other one is due December 1. I sent the information about one month ago.see if they still have the information, if not, come see me ASAP and get going on these scholarships.

The John B. and Brownie Young scholarship is not out yet. Everyone that ranks in the top 1/3 of the class will be eligible. Continue to keep your grades up so you will be allowed to get this scholarship.

The Financial Aid form (FAFSA) will not be allowed to be completed until after January 1, 2006. I will have a parent information session in January.details later.

It is important to fill out the FAFSA because you never know what you may get. The FAFSA asks for information about income, assets and expenses. This information is plugged into a formula set by Congress to determine how much federal and state aid you will be eligible for. Both students and parents have to provide information under federal guidelines. You can submit the form online at www.fafsa.ed.gov Students who submit the FAFSA online usually get a response a week or two faster than those who mail in a paper FAFSA. In addition, when students file online, fewer mistakes are made. If you leave something out, the computer won't process the file until it is answered. IF you fill in something that looks wrong, the computer will ask you to check your answer.

REDUCING TEST ANXIETY

****
Avoid "Cramming". Study as the semester progresses. You will retain more and tests will be easier.

Don't feel rushed if other student finish before you do; testing is not a race.

Don't think about grades, or how you will do compared to other students.

Organize all the information on the exam.

Relax - take deep breaths to help control your anxiety.

Read through the entire test before you start. Often there are clue in questions that can clear up other confusing questions.

Read the directions twice.

Essay---create a short outline to help organize your thoughts.

Multiple choice - read all the possible answers. Watch out for words that qualify an answer. i.e. only, all, or always just to name a few.

TEST ANXIETY IS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE MANAGED WITH A LITTLE PRACTICE. The anxiety will become less of a distraction if you determine the reason behind your anxiety.

So get prepared for the ACT or SAT tests by reviewing weeks before the test. Do not review the night before---this can cause anxiety itself. Besides -how can one night of studying get you ready for an entire ACT or SAT. Get on www.number2.com and get some practice long before the test.

I have contacted a fire fighter and he is willing to speak to a small group. Please let me know if you are seriously interested in this career so I can set a time and date with him to speak to you. I know that Jordan Lyons is interested, so let me know if YOU ARE INTERESTED. I WILL GET BACK TO YOU ON THE TIME AND DATE.

I have also contacted a Physician's Assistant and he is willing to speak to a small group of seniors. Let me know and I will contact you with the time and date he will be at Apollo. I have Kim Blandford and John Krzton Preston already signed up. YOU MUST LET ME KNOW IF YOU WANT TO HEAR HIM SPEAK.

OCTCS SCHOLARSHIPS ARE NOT PRINTED YET. AS SOON AS I GET SOME, I WILL PASS THEM OUT TO YOU. THE OCTCS DEADLINE IS NOT UNTIL APRIL 1. YOU SHOULD APPLY TO OCTCS NOW SO YOU WILL HAVE EARLY ADVISEMENT. SEE ME FOR AN APPLICATON.

If you are interested in researching possible careers that fit you, please mark your calendar for Tuesday, October 25 th . I will have you do a career interest inventory and we will discuss the results.

Get ready to vote on some Graduation items---it is getting closer to that special day.
