In academic circles across the Western world, literary critics have been discussing the value of the traditional canon of Western Literature. The traditional canon is a list of classical literature that many believe to be the backbone of academic pursuits; these literary pieces are a significant part of our society and in order to be an educated member of society, it is believed important to read these selections.
Why are these pieces of literature considered classics? Is it important that every student read them? What value do they have in society? What are the themes of these selections and how are they relevant in our world today? Through an analysis of the works assigned, you will draw some conclusions about these issues and support or refute whether the author and selections deserve a place on the list of Great Books.
