Barbie Bungee Jumping
My class worked on linear functions and continues to work on different types of functions. We studied linear functions. The students simulated bungee jumping for Barbie with rubber bands and drop distance for numerous rubber band lengths.
After gathering the data, the students plotted the data and wrote an equation to model the data so that when I gave them the height of the gym rail, they could figure the number of rubber bands needed to give Barbie the best thrill without injury. After the calculations were completed and the rubber bands attached to Barbie, we went to the gym and let each group drop Barbie from the gym rail. Some were really short and a few were too long. One was perfect, with Barbie's hair just brushing the floor.
The students had fun and learned about gathering data and making predictions using data. ———— Mrs. Jones
