Student Loan People JV Challenge
The AHS junior varsity academic team placed second overall in the 6th Annual Section 2 Student Loan People JV Challenge at Owensboro Catholic High School on Saturday, Nov. 19. The Student Loan People JV Challenge is a competition in quick recall and written assessment designed to give an additional competition opportunity for Kentucky's ninth and tenth grade students.
Team standings and scores were: 1st, Henderson County, 43; 2nd, 2000 and 2001 champion Apollo, 32.5; 3rd, Owensboro, 31; 4th, Daviess County, 22.5; 5th, Madisonville-North Hopkins, 11.5; 6th, Owensboro Catholic, 5.5; 7th, Muhlenberg North, 4.
In the double-elimination quick recall competition, 2000, 2001 and 2003 champion Apollo went 3-2, outscored their opponents 148-128, and placed 3rd. Lauren Thomas led the team in scoring, followed by Nathan Kitchens, Courtney Schisler, Jordan Merimee, Emily Jones and Alex Krampe. Match results were: Round 1 - defeated Owensboro Catholic 26-17. Round 2 - lost to Henderson County 33-30. Round 3 - defeated Madisonville-North Hopkins 35-17. Round 4 - defeated Daviess County 32-29. Round 5 - lost to Henderson County 32-25.
In the written assessment competition, the top six students in each of five subject area were awarded medals. Written assessment results for the AHS JV team were: Arts and Humanities - 1st, Lauren Thomas; 15th, Betsy Harpe; 18th, Rose-Krzton-Presson. Language Arts - 3rd, Garrett Scott; 6th, Courtney Schisler; 11th, Alison Schroeder. Social Studies - 1st, Lauren Thomas; 3rd, Josh Edmonson; 6th, Ethan Richards. Science - 7th, Alli Sehon; 13th, Nathan Kitchens; 14th, Derrick Gauselman. Mathematics - 5th, Matt Atkins; tied for 11th, Emily Jones and Jordan Merimee.
Brookwood Invitational Scholars Bowl
The Apollo quick recall team placed 9th in the 18th Annual Brookwood Invitational Scholars Bowl at Brookwood H.S.in Snellville, Georgia, Nov. 19.
The tournament featured 140 teams from 79 schools from 8 states, making it the largest academic quiz bowl tournament in the nation hosted by one high school. Each team played six preliminary matches, with the top 128 advancing to a single-elimination playoff.
The Eagles went 9-1 in the tournament, brought their season record to 38-15, outscored their opponents 2,250 to 970 and placed 9th as the No. 10 seed. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring, followed by Ryan Seabolt, Ian Wilkey and Thomas Cameron.
Raleigh (N.C.) Charter School won the tournament by defeating Heritage I of Conyers, Ga., 250-125 in the championship match. Walton I of Marietta, Ga. placed third and Ezell-Harding Christian School of Antioch, Tenn. was fourth.
Preliminary match results were: Round 1 - defeated Centennial I of Roswell, Ga., 190-125. Round 2 - defeated Central Gwinnett II of Lawrenceville, Ga., 210-75. Round 3 - defeated Heritage II of Conyers, Ga., 230-140. Round 4 - defeated Boiling Springs II of Spartanburg, S.C., 260-20. Round 5 - defeated Mary Persons I of Forsyth, Ga., 180-60. Round 6 - defeated Okeechobee II (Fla.), 200-105. Playoff match results were: Round of 128 - No. 10 seed Apollo defeated No. 119 seed East Paulding of Dallas, Ga., 270-30. Round of 64 - defeated No. 74 seed Walton III of Marietta, Ga., 260-130. Round of 32 - defeated No. 42 seed Westminster School of Atlanta, Ga., 300-95. Round of 16 - lost to No. 7 seed Madisonville North Hopkins, 190-150.

Pennyrile Meet #5
The Apollo academic team competed in Pennyrile Academic Association meet #5 at Muhlenberg South High School Nov. 28.
The varsity quick recall went 2-0, defeating Muhlenberg South 33-18 and Owensboro 32-14, finishing the PAA season with a 10-0 record and bringing their overall record to 40-15. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring, followed by Thomas Cameron, Ryan Seabolt and Travis Mcmaine.
The junior varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating Muhlenberg South 20-19 and Owensboro 16-13, finishing the PAA season with an 8-2 record and bringing their overall record to 21-10. Lauren Thomas led the team in scoring, followed by Nathan Kitchens and Courtney Schisler.

2005-2006 PAA Final Standings
The Apollo academic team once again placed among the top teams in the overall standings for the 5-meet season of the 15-school Pennyrile Academic Association. The varsity quick recall placed first with a 10-0 record. This is the 10th time Apollo's varsity has placed 1st in the PAA and the 8th time they have gone undefeated, with 17 top-3 placings and an overall record of 176-19 in 18 years of PAA varsity quick recall. The junior varsity quick recall team placed 2nd with an 8-2 record, Apollo's 13th top-4 placing, with an overall record of 138-36 in 16 years of PAA JV quick recall.
In written assessment, AHS earned 1 of the 10 first-place overall plaques, third highest in the PAA. We earned 6 of the 51 plaques for placing in the top 5 overall, fourth highest in the PAA. We placed 14 team members in the top 10 overall, second highest in the PAA. We placed 33 team members in the top 20 overall, 9 more than any other PAA school.
The final overall standings were determined by the total of the students' top 3 scores. AHS students placing in the top 20 overall in the final season standings were:
