Ezell-Harding Christian School Academic Tournament

Two Apollo quick recall teams participated in the Ezell-Harding Christian School Academic Tournament in Antioch , Tennessee , Sept. 17. The tournament featured 54 teams from 6 states.

In the tournament, teams were divided into nine six-team pools and each team played five preliminary matches. The top three teams from each pool and five "wild cards" advanced to a 32-team single-elimination playoff, seeded by win-loss records and total points in the preliminaries.

Walton H.S. of Marietta , Ga. , the No. 2 seed, placed first by defeating No. 1 seed Dunbar A of Lexington, Ky. in the championship match. Dorman H.S. A of Spartanburg, S.C., the No. 4 seed, placed third by defeating No. 3 seed Danville (Ky.) H.S. in the consolation match.

Apollo A went 5-2 in the tournament, outscored their opponents 1,940 to 1,180, and brought their season record to 7-2. They went 4-1 in the preliminaries, placed second in their pool, and advanced to the playoffs as the No. 13 seed. They went 1-1 in the playoffs and placed 9th. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring, followed by Thomas Cameron, Ryan Seabolt and Ian Wilkey. Apollo B went 2-4 in the tournament. They went 2-3 in the preliminaries and advanced as a "wild card" to the playoffs as the No. 32 seed. They went 0-1 in the playoffs and placed 17th. Lauren Thomas led the team in scoring, followed by Seth Bodnar, Nathan Kitchens, Derrick Gauselman, Josh Edmonson, Alex Krampe, Rose Krzton-Presson, Garrett Scott, Alli Sehon and Jermey Taylor.

Preliminary match results were: Round 1 - AHS A defeated Dunbar H.S. D, 250-100; AHS B defeated Munford ( Tenn. ) H.S., 200-80. Round 2 - AHS A lo to Dorman H.S. A., 250-240; AHS B lost to Dorman H.S. B, 340-150. Round 3 - AHS A defeated Covenant Christian School B of Huntsville, Ala., 390-100; AHS B lost to Brookwood H.S. A of Snellville , Ga. , 430-80. Round 4 - AHS A defeated Hardin County H.S. of Savannah , Tenn. , 350-70; AHS B defeated Richland H.S. A of Lynnville , Tenn. , 200-120. Round 5 - AHS A defeated Rossview H.S. A of Clarksville , Tenn. , 350-210; AHS B lost to St. Andrews Episcopal School of Jackson, Miss., 250-210.

Playoff match results were: Round of 32 - No. 13 seed Apollo A defeated No. 20 seed St. Andrews Episcopal School, 210-190; No. 32 seed AHS B lost to No. 1 seed Dunbar A, 350-90. Round of 16 - AHS A lost to Dorman A, 260-150.

Central Hardin High School Academic Challenge

The Apollo varsity and two junior varsity quick recall teams participated in the Central Hardin High School Academic Challenge at Central Hardin High School in Cecilia Sept. 24. The varsity tournament featured 24 teams from five states and the JV tournament featured 24 teams from two states.

In the tournaments, teams were divided into four pools and played five preliminary matches. The top sixteen teams advanced to single-elimination playoffs, seeded by win-loss record and total points in the pool matches. The eight teams not making the championship playoffs played a consolation bracket playoff.

In the varsity tournament, Walton H.S. of Marietta , Ga. (8-1), the No. 5 seed, placed first by defeating No. 3 seed Danville (8-1) in the championship match. Dunbar (7-2), the No. 1 seed, placed third by defeating No. 10 seed Central Hardin (5-4) in the consolation match.

The AHS varsity went 3-3, outscored their opponents 1,311 to 1,130, brought their overall record to 10-5, and placed ninth as the No. 9 seed. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring, followed by Thomas Cameron, Ian Wilkey and Ryan Seabolt.

In the JV tournament, Dunbar A (9-0), the No. 1 seed, placed first by defeating No. 2 seed Johnson Central in the championship match. Edmonson County (7-2), the No. 3 seed placed third by defeating No. 4 seed Clay County (6-3) in the consolation match.

AHS JV A went 4-2, outscored their opponents 1,270 to 1,090, brought their overall record to 5-3, and placed ninth as the #8 seed. Nathan Kitchens led the team in scoring, followed by Josh Edmonson, Jordan Merimee, Courney Schisler, Matt Atkins, Garrett Scott and Alli Sehon.

AHS JV B went 3-5, placed 17th and then won the JV consolation bracket tournament. Derrick Gauselman led the team in scoring, followed by Ethan Richards, Alex Krampe, Betsey Harpe, Matt Reynolds, Emily Jones and Nathan Bryant.

Preliminary match results for Apollo were: Round 1 - Varsity defeated Henderson County 1-0 by forfeit; JV A defeated Breckinridge County B 220-200 in overtime; JV B lost to Henderson County C 230-150. Round 2 - Varsity lost to Danville 320-290; JV A defeated Central Hardin 210-130; JV B lost to Danville 290-100. Round 3 - Varsity defeated John Hardin 400-150; JV A defeated Hazard 200-180 in overtime; JV B lost to Johnson Central 340-110. Round 4 - Varsity defeated Piarist School 270-220; JV A lost to Campbell County 210-200; JV B lost to Detroit (Mich.) Catholic Central 200-150. Round 5 - Varsity lost to Walton 250-200; JV A defeated Breckinridge County A 280-170; JV B lost to Corbin B 200-160.

Championship bracket playoff match results for Apollo were: Round of 16 - No. 9 seed Apollo varsity lost to No. 8 seed Madisonville-North Hopkins B 190-150; No. 8 seed Apollo JV A lost to No. 9 seed Piarist School 200-160.

Consolation bracket playoff match results for Apollo were: Quarterfinals - JV B defeated Butler 120-100. Semifinals - JV B defeated East Hardin 150-60. Championship match - JV B defeated North Hardin 160-80.

Pennyrile Meet #2

The Apollo academic team hosted Pennyrile Academic Association meet #2 Sept. 26.

The varsity quick recall team went 2-0, defeating Henderson County 27-12 and Hopkins County Central 43-2, improving their Pennyrile record to 4-0 and their overall record to 12-5. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring with 12 tossups per match, followed by Ian Wilkey, Thomas Cameron and Ryan Seabolt.

The junior varsity quick recall team went 1-1, defeating Hopkins County Central 21-4 and losing to Henderson County 18-14, bringing their Pennyrile record to 2-2 and their overall record to 6-4. Lauren Thomas led the team in scoring with 10 tossups per match, followed by Josh Edmonson, Jordan Merimee, Nathan Kitchens and Garrett Scott.

Varsity written assessment results were: Arts and Humanities - 1st, Elizabeth Rogers; 3rd, Joseph Early; 4th, Ashley Boswell; 5th, Delana Hill. Language Arts - 1st, Seth Bodnar; 2nd, Carrie Gentry; 3rd, Natalie Johnson; 4th, Meghan Van Bussum; tied for Social Studies - 1st, Thomas Cameron; 3rd, Tristan Hoover; 5th, Jermey Taylor; 6th, Jeremy Early. Science - tied for 2nd, Roel Flores and Wei Ji; 6th, Branden Payton; tied for 7th, Derek Morgan and Kevin Reel; 10th, Rob Milburn. Math - tied for 1st, Ryan Seabolt and Ian Wilkey; 4th, Grace Oh; 6th, Casey Cambron.

Junior varsity written assessment results were: Arts and Humanities - 1st, Lauren Thomas; 3rd, Kaytee Williams; tied for 5th, Betsey Harpe and Rose Krzton-Presson. Language Arts - 3rd, Courtney Schisler; 4th, Whitney Thomas; 5th, Alison Schroeder; 6th, Garrett Scott. Social Studies - 3rd, Ethan Richards; 4th, Josh Edmonson; 8th, Derrick Gauselman; 10th, Alex Krampe. Science - 2nd, Rebecca Robertson; 3rd, Nathan Kitchens; 4th, Nathan Bryant; 5th, Alli Sehon. Math - 1st, Jordan Merimee; 3rd, Matt Atkins; tied for 4th, Cheryl Kreke and Chelsea Tipmore; 8th, Emily Jones.

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Earlybird Tournament

The Apollo quick recall team placed second for the second consecutive year in the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Earlybird Tournament October 1 in Urbana-Champaign, Illinois. The tournament featured 12 Illinois teams and Apollo. The teams were divided into two pools and played five or six preliminary matches. The top two teams from each pool played two playoff matches against the top two teams from the opposite pool and the top two playoff teams played a championship match to determine the overall winner.

Defending Illinois state champion Rockford Auburn H.S. (9-0) won the tournament by defeating Apollo (6-2) 300-295 in the championship match. Bloomington H.S. (6-2) placed third and Wilmette Loyola Academy A (4-3) placed fourth.

Apollo went 6-2 in the tournament, outscored their opponents 2,660 to 1,635 and brought their overall record to 18-7. They went 5-0 in the preliminaries and won their pool. They went 1-1 in the playoffs. Elizabeth Rogers led the team in scoring followed by Thomas Cameron, Ryan Seabolt and Ian Wilkey. Elizabeth Rogers earned a medal for placing third in individual scoring among all participants in the preliminaries.

Preliminary match results for Apollo were: Round 1 - defeated Bradley Bourbonnais H.S. B, 460-70. Round 2 - defeated Carbondale H.S. A, 315-265. Round 3 - defeated Effingham H.S., 470-65. Round 4 - defeated Wilmette Loyola Academy A, 325-185. Round 5 - defeated Winnebago H.S., 280-240.

Playoff match results were: Round 1 - defeated Bloomington H.S., 280-225. Round 2 - lost to Rockford Auburn H.S., 285-235.

Championship Match- lost to Rockford Auburn H.S., 300-295.

Apollo quick recall team members Seth Bodnar, Thomas Cameron, Josh Edmonson, Derrick Gauselman, Nathan Kitchens, Alex Krampe, Rose Krzton-Presson, Elizabeth Rogers, Garrett Scott, Ryan Seabolt, Alli Sehon, Jermey Taylor, Lauren Thomas and Ian Wilkey participated in the Ezell-Harding Christian School Academic Tournament Sept. 17.
