Sophomore Parent Meeting

A sophomore parent meeting was held on January 30 to discuss the PLAN test results.   Parents were given an extra copy of the PLAN test results as well as information on how to utilize the scores and career information.  Every sophomore did take the PLAN test in September at no cost to the student.   Ms. Jan Young visited all fine arts classes and gave each student back his/her results.  If you have not seen the test results, please ask your son/daughter for the information.  If you wish to meet with Ms. Jan Young to review the information, please call 852-7105 and ask for Kristi Roe.  Mrs. Roe will set an appointment time at your convenience.  All sophomores are encouraged to make an appointment to see Ms. Young, please check with your son/daughter to see if he/she has met with Ms. Young.

Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine is offering a professional education preparation program for high school students.  The purpose of the program is explain the osteopathic medical field and expand the student’s knowledge regarding the time and work commitment needed to succeed in medical school.  Students will stay on the Pikeville campus from June 9-22 at no cost to the family. Eligibility for free participation is based on an annual family income AFTER ALL DEDUCTIONS of $75,000 or less.  If a family earns more than $75,000, students can still apply, but must be willing to pay the cost of their participation.  If you have questions, please call Jan Young or Stephen Payson at Pikeville College at (606)218-5400.

On February 5, all sophomores met in the auditorium and were given information regarding scheduling for next year’s classes.  Parents please review the class courses with your son/daughter. Assist him/her in selecting classes that can possibly help with career choices.   If a student is interested in the medical field, encourage them to take a science course such as Anatomy/Physiology.  If a student is interested in a class such as welding, machine tool, cosmetology- encourage your son/daughter to review the course offerings through the Owensboro Community Technical College.  Students are to register on line, but if he/she would like to meet with Ms. Young to discuss this, please encourage him/her to do so.

Some sophomores will be involved in a credit recovery program this semester due to failing a required course.   If you have not seen a first semester report card, contact Jan Young.  In order to graduate from Apollo High School, all required courses must be completed with a passing grade as well as earning credits for the appropriate diploma.  Parents are encouraged to review their son/daughter’s current grades through the computer.   Sophomores have five required courses this and it is imperative to keep up with his/her grades.   In order to participate in the credit recovery program (call pass/key) a student must have a semester average of 55 or higher.  If you would like more information, contact Catherine Shelton or Jan Young.

The Wendell Foster Campus is looking for volunteers to help.  For further information regarding what this entails, please call Lindsey Mattingly at 852-1458.  This is a great opportunity for students to build his/her resume that involved community support.

It has been wonderful meeting several of the sophomores.   I look forward to meeting more and helping in whatever way I can.   Please call me if I can be of assistance.
