Band Curriculum Course Change - Mr. Benningfield presented the following curriculum change for Apollo Band.

The Apollo High School Band is open to students in grades 9-12 who have prior training on a band instrument, (i.e. middle school band). Students will be exposed to a wide variety of music, literature, and performance opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to participate in the "Marching Eagles" on a co-curricular basis. All students MUST be enrolled in band in order to participate as a member of the Marching Band. Marching Band is no longer a requirement for membership in the Apollo High School Band. Students who participate in band class will be exposed to the Symphonic Band experience on a year long basis. There is a fee involved with this class.

Students of the band will have the following opportunities: Marching Band, Solo and Ensemble Festival, All-District and All-State Band, and Jazz Band as stated in the requirements for that class. Students who faithfully participate in all aspects of the band at Apollo High School will have the opportunity to apply for the Logan Jacob Satterly Memorial Scholarship. This is a $1,000 scholarship that is presented to one senior band member each year.

This change will allow students who wish to participate in band but who have previously had a conflict with marching band requirements due to the desire to participate in fall sports or work after school be able to play in the symphonic band during school time. It will also increase the level of participants in the Marching band merely by the band being composed of those students who have a true desire to participate in marching competitions.

Mrs. Morris moved to accept this curriculum change. Mr. Morgan seconded the motion and there was consensus.

Elections - Mr. Purcell stated that two staff representatives would have to be elected to the council and one parent representative will have to be elected. Elections are typically held the 1 st or 2 nd week of April, with nominations being taken during March. Mr. Purcell stated that specific election procedures would be sent out to the staff and parents via e-mail, newsletter and media notification.

The date for the next SBDC meeting is Tuesday, April 15, 2005 at 4:00 p.m. in the conference room.

There being no further business a motion was made by Melissa Morris to adjourn at 4:54 p.m. James Morgan seconded the motion and there was consensus.

Respectfully submitted,

Becki Burton
